BELFRY, Ky. — A firefighter with the Belfry Volunteer Fire Department died while responding to a mutual aid call, WCHS reports.
Darrell Helton, 49, died from a medical emergency after assisting in shuttling water to a structure fire alongside a neighboring fire agency on Sept. 4, according to WCHS.
Helton told a fellow firefighter that he felt a fluttering in his chest but he was “okay,” an incident report from Supporting Heroes. He sat down to take a rest on the tanker’s running board, but a short time later, he collapsed.
The incident report said CPR was initiated and he was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
